Les soldats américains n’ont débarqué en Europe qu’en 1917, mais ont surtout été déployés en Belgique lors de l’offensive finale de 1918. Le cimetière militaire américain de Waregem est le seul cimetière belge où reposent quelque 370 soldats américains de la Première Guerre mondiale. En 1927, Charles Lindbergh a rendu hommage aux soldats morts à la guerre en parsemant le cimetière de coquelicots.
