Grandson se situe au bord du lac de Neuchâtel à 4 km au nord d'Yverdon-les-Bains. La commune s'étend aussi jusqu'à la rivière Arnon au Nord puis à l'est lorsqu'elle rejoint le lac.
Le 2 mars 1476 eut lieu la bataille de Grandson, qui vit la victoire des confédérés, alliés de Louis XI de France, sur Charles le Téméraire.
Depuis la création du canton de Vaud en 1803 et jusqu'au 31 décembre 2007, Grandson a été chef-lieu du district du même nom avant que cette région ne devienne partie prenante du nouveau district du Jura-Nord vaudois à la suite de l'adoption de la nouvelle Constitution cantonale vaudoise par les citoyens de ce canton en 2003.
