Elle prend sa source à Tavannes, au pied du col de Pierre-Pertuis, à une altitude de 765 m, et coule tout au long de la vallée de Tavannes. Après un parcours de 73 km, elle se jette dans le Rhin à Bâle, à une altitude de 262 m.
L’origine de son nom, qui est utilisé depuis le XVe siècle, est controversée. Il pourrait provenir de «Beheres» ou de «Bir» qui en celte englobe les termes d'eau et de cours d'eau.
