Le Ballon d'Alsace est imprimé dans la mémoire de nombreux amateurs de vélo. Le sommet le plus haut et le plus méridional des Vosges, appelé aussi le "Géant dAlsace" ou le "Grand Bleu" est répertorié comme le premier col franchi par les coureurs du Tour de France. Le Ballon d'Alsace revêt une signification spéciale pour les amateurs de cyclisme Belges. Cest là en effet qu'Eddy Merckx anéantit tous les espoirs de ses concurrents lors de sa première participation en 1969.
