Le bagne de Brest était un établissement pénitentiaire, en activité de 1749 à 1858. Le bâtiment principal du bagne, construit par Antoine Choquet de Lindu de 1750 à 1751, dominait le port du long de ses 254 mètres, à l'emplacement de l'actuel boulevard Jean-Moulin, sur la rive gauche de la Penfeld . Il fut détruit à la fin des années 1940 lors de la reconstruction de Brest. Deuxième bagne de France après celui de Toulon, il pouvait loger jusqu'à 3 700 forçats, et a accueilli près de 60 000 condamnés en un siècle, dont un tiers est mort en détention. Il a joué un rôle clef tant pour l'institution judiciaire et pénitentiaire que pour la ville de Brest, marquée par la présence de cette population atypique en plein cœur de la ville et par leurs nombreuses réalisations.
