Lugdunum , aujourd'hui Lyon, est le nom du site gaulois où une colonie de droit romain est fondée en 43 av. J.-C. par Lucius Munatius Plancus, alors gouverneur de la Gaule, sous la titulature initiale de Colonia Copia Felix Munatia Lugudunum. Cette colonie, fondée à l'occasion des troubles qui suivent l'assassinat de Jules César en 44 av. J.-C., connaît une prospérité importante mais liée au sort de l'empire durant toute l'Antiquité. Ce terme regroupe également par rapprochement les sites hors de la colonie propre mais dépendants du noyau central , la presqu'île dite « les canabae », la Croix-Rousse dite « condate », Vaise - ces deux derniers précédemment d'occupation celte - et les campagnes environnantes.
