Le château d’Este , appelé aussi château de Saint Michel, est le monument le plus important de Ferrare, un édifice en briques à plan carré doté de quatre tours défensives, situé en plein centre-ville.
La maison d'Este, dont le nom dérive de la ville d'Este située dans la région vénète, et de leur fief, a une origine très ancienne. Les premières informations remontent au IXe siècle, lorsque Azzo VI, pendant les luttes intérieures entre les guelfes et gibelins, prit le pouvoir sur Ferrare. Obizzo II, encore enfant, parvint à la seigneurie le 7 février 1264 ; pendant les années suivantes il obtint le même titre à Modène et à Reggio d'Émilie. Une longue période de luttes féroces suivit, mais à la fin du XIIIe siècle le pouvoir des Este était définitivement consolidé.
