L'arsenal de Venise , aussi appelé arsenal de la république sérénissime, est construit en 1104 sur l'initiative du doge Ordelafo Faliero. Ce chantier naval joue un rôle déterminant dans la construction de l'empire vénitien, permettant la production rapide de nombreux navires. Ceint par 3 km de murailles crénelées de briques rouges, il emploie jusqu'à 16 000 personnes à son apogée et peut être considéré à la fois par sa taille, par son ancienneté ainsi que par l'ingéniosité de sa conception et de son fonctionnement comme l'un des premiers sites véritablement « industriels » apparus en Europe.
