Almada est une municipalité du Portugal, située dans le district de Setúbal et la région de Lisbonne.Almada s'appelait en arabe المعدن . La raison en est que, à l'époque de Al-Andalus, les Maures exploitaient le gisement d'or de l'Adiça. Le site de Almada fut choisi par ailleurs pour la construction d'une forteresse sur le promontoire naturel. L'objectif était la défense et la surveillance de l'entrée du Tage, face à Lisbonne. La population s'affaira dans les domaines liés à la défense militaire, l'agriculture et la pêche. Almada devint l'une des principales places fortes arabes au sud du Tage.
