Sa première troupe fut fondée par le roi Gustave III de Suède, et la première représentation donnée le 18 janvier 1773. Le premier opéra a été inauguré en 1780, et a été utilisé pendant un siècle avant d'être remplacé à la fin du XIXe siècle. Le nom de ces deux bâtiments a beaucoup varié au cours de l'histoire.
