Il castello di Linderhof è situato nei pressi della cittadina di Oberammergau, nella Baviera del sud, nei pressi dell'abbazia di Ettal, in Germania. Esso è il più piccolo dei tre castelli costruiti da Re Ludovico II di Baviera e l'unico che lo stesso sovrano riuscì a vedere completato.
Ludwig conosceva bene la zona dove successivamente avrebbe fatto sorgere il proprio castello dal momento che la frequentava sin dalla giovane età, quando accompagnava il padre re Massimiliano II di Baviera durante le sue battute di caccia sulle Alpi Bavaresi. Qui esisteva infatti una piccola tenuta di caccia con un cascinale in legno con base in pietra, edificato nel 1790, che suo padre aveva ribattezzato Königshäuschen.
