Centro tra i più popolosi del Salento, la città riveste un importante ruolo commerciale e culturale, dovuto alla sua fortunata posizione sul mare Adriatico. È stata sede provvisoria del governo nel Regno d'Italia dal 1943 al 1944.
Brindisi sorge su un porto naturale, un'insenatura che si incunea profondamente nella costa adriatica della Puglia. All'interno dei bracci più esterni del porto vi sono le isole Pedagne, un arcipelago minuscolo attualmente non visitabile perché utilizzato per scopi militari .
