La Maiella è il secondo massiccio montuoso più alto degli Appennini continentali dopo il Gran Sasso.
È situato nell'Appennino abruzzese, al confine tra le province di Chieti, L'Aquila e Pescara, con la cima più alta rappresentata dal monte Amaro, 2793 m s.l.m.. È sede dell'omonimo parco nazionale e su di essa insistevano la comunità montana Peligna, la comunità montana della Maiella e del Morrone, la comunità montana della Maielletta e la comunità montana Aventino-Medio Sangro.
