Castellammare Adriatico fu un comune istituito nel 1807, nato dalla divisione dell'universitas di Pescara che separò il nuovo comune dalla fortezza di Pescara. Il comune di Castellammare occupava la porzione di territorio dell'attuale città di Pescara a nord dell'omonimo fiume. Fu aggregato al distretto di Penne all'interno dell'Abruzzo Ulteriore Primo, ente che nel 1881 si trasformerà nella provincia di Teramo, in seguito all'unità d'Italia. I comuni sulle sponde opposte del fiume vennero infine riuniti nel 1927.
