I Cavalieri Ospitalieri , è un ordine religioso cavalleresco nato intorno alla prima metà dell'XI secolo a Gerusalemme.
In seguito alla prima crociata divenne un ordine religioso cavalleresco cristiano dotato di un proprio statuto, secondo il costume del tempo. Quindi, nel 1113 Papa Pasquale II lo rese autonomo e sovrano con il protettorato della Santa Sede. Se fino ad allora l'Ordine seguiva la Regola benedettina, piano piano iniziò ad osservare quella agostiniana. Infine il maestro Raymond du Puy de Provence diede all'Ordine una regola propria, ispirata sempre a quella agostiniana.
