Il monastero di Alvastra era un monastero cistercense situato a Omberg nel comune di Ödeshög. Alvastra fu fondata nel 1143 dai monaci provenienti dal monastero francese di Clairvaux contemporaneamente di un altro importante monastero svedese medievale, quello di Nydala.
Questi due monasteri furono le prime sedi dell'ordine cistercense in Scandinavia. Il monastero di Alvastra, in particolare, costituì un centro molto importante di spiritualità e in seguito di amministrazione ecclesiastica sin da quando alcuni suoi monaci lasciarono l'abbazia per fondarne altre da lei dipendenti e diffondere il cattolicesimo nell'Europa del Nord.
