Fa parte della Catena delle Cascate, precisamente del settore settentrionale , ma risulta piuttosto isolato e distante dagli altri grandi vulcani della regione raggruppati nell'arco vulcanico delle Cascate. Situato nella contea di Snohomish, è a soli 110 km da Seattle, ossia abbastanza vicino da costituire un pericolo per la città in caso di eruzione. Tuttavia, a differenza per esempio del Monte Rainier, il Glacier Peak non è facilmente distinguibile da grande distanza, a causa delle sue forme poco imponenti.
Nonostante domini da più di tremila metri i fondi delle basse valli circostanti, il vero e proprio edificio vulcanico è molto più modesto e piccolo in volume; ciò è dovuto al fatto che il vulcano si è formato al di sopra di un massiccio montuoso già di per sé elevato.
