Uit geologische afzettingen weten we dat er 8150 jaar geleden, een gigantische tsunami hier in de Noordzee was met vloedgolven van meer dan 10 m die tegen de kusten van Noorwegen, de Shetlandeilenanden en Schotland beukten. De tsunami werd veroorzaakt door een submarine aardverschuiving voor de kust van Noorwegen. Deze ramp staat gekend als de Storegga Slide. Waarschijnlijk overspoelde de tsunami ook volledig het toenmalige Doggereiland en de Doggerbank.
