België is ongetwijfeld hét frietland. Maar die kwam eigenlijk uit Frankrijk. De friet is in 1838 in België geïntroduceerd door de Duitser Fritz Krieger, die het op zijn beurt geleerd heeft in Parijs van de Fransen. De introductie vond plaats op de kermis, waar in die tijd de meeste mensen de buitenwereld leerden kennen. Krieger was zo succesvol met zijn frietkot, dat hij ook de eerste keten van frietkotten opzette. Doe er nog een portie mosselen bij de friet en je hebt echt een klassieker die je moet proberen.
