Terwijl vele Italianen een schone pree kwamen verdienen in de Limburgse mijnen, ging Ivo Molenaers bij Carpano de stiel van gregario leren in Italië. Tweede in Milaan-San Remo in 1962 en dertig keer een lange afstand klassieker uitrijden dat betekende veel. Ivo Molenaers zette in Riemst zijn Hotel-Restaurant Malpertuus neer, werd de schoonvader van Valerio Piva, en alle toppers uit het (Italiaanse) wielrennen komen graag bij hem logeren. Hove Malpertuus is de ideale uitvalsbasis voor de klimklassiekers Waalse Pijl, Luik-Bastenaken-Luik en de Amstel Gold Race.
