Eeuwenoude dreven kenmerken het domeinbos Hertberg. Vroeger functioneerden deze dreven als privéweg voor de Prinsen de Merode tussen het kasteel van Westerlo en de abdij van Averbode. Meestal waren ze in véél betere staat dan de omliggende openbare wegen die dikwijls in een modderpoel waren herschapen door de smalle karrenwielen.
