Het fort is een onderdeel van de Brialmontverdediging en werd voltooid in 1864. Het is één van de best bewaarde forten en heeft opvallend hoge wallen. Naast de militair-historische waarde, is het fort vandaag zowel voor recreatie als natuur belangrijk. De grote gracht is een aantrekkingspunt voor watergebonden soorten zoals watervleermuizen. Aan de toegang van het fort leeft een heel grote populatie van gewone pad, alpen- en kleine watersalamander. Het fort is geleidelijk aan verbost en werd zo ook aantrekkelijk voor typische bosbewoners zoals salomonszegel de eikenpage. Op deze plek leeft een toproofvogel: de bosuil. In de open velden rond het fort jaagt de gewone dwergvleermuis op insecten.
