De begraafplaats van Oeren, in de schaduw van de kerk, lag bij uitzondering niet aan een hospitaal of verbandpost, maar was een uitwijkplaats voor de veel te vol gelopen begraafplaats van Alveringem.
In maart 1915 liggen op het kerkhof van Alveringem al een 200-tal soldaten begraven. Omdat de toestand er onhoudbaar wordt, is de inrichting van een militair kerkhof in Oeren bevolen, tegen de zin van de gemeente. Maar ook dat is maar van korte duur, begin november 1915 wordt de begraafplaats van Oeren "voorlopig" gesloten. Vanaf dan worden de lichamen van de gesneuvelde militairen naar de militaire begraafplaats van Adinkerke overgebracht. Pas vanaf 1917 zullen er opnieuw gesneuvelde militairen in Oeren begraven worden.
