Het kasteel van Chillon werd populair gemaakt door Lord Byron. Die schreef het gedicht "De gevangene van Chillon (1816)" over François de Bonivard, een Genevois monnik en politicus die daar gevangen zat van 1530-1536. Byron kerfde ook zijn naam op een pilaar van de kerkers. Het kasteel is een van de settings in Henry James's novelle Daisy Miller (1878).
