Het Martin-Gropius-Bau is een tentoonstellingsruimte genoemd naar zijn architect. Laat je niet verwarren door de achternaam van Martin Gropius: hij had een achterneef, de veel bekendere Walter Gropius. Díe was de stichter van het fameuze Bauhaus: modern, strak, functioneel, zakelijk technisch geometrisch, kortom: alles wat dit gebouw niet is. Wèl heeft Walter Gropius de aanzet gegeven om dit museum uit 1877 weer te herstellen nadat het in de oorlog zwaar beschadigd was. Zo bleef het in de familie. De gekleurde en vergulde reliëfs en mozaïeken die rondom zijn aangebracht beelden de meester-leerling situatie uit in verschillende ambachten. De meeste sculpturen zijn gerestaureerd na de beschadigingen die ze opliepen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Maar om de geschiedenis niet helemaal uit te wissen, zijn de twee beelden die de ingang flankeren in hun gehavende staat gelaten. Als contrast.
