Het Prado is één van de bekendste museums ter wereld, maar het was eigenlijk niet bedoels als kunstmuseum. Eigenlijk wilde de toenmalige koning er een natuurwetenschappelijk museum van maken. Toen het de bouw van het museum af was, werd er kunst in ondergebracht die door de Spaanse koninklijke familie verzameld was.
De collectie omvat werken van de 14e tot de 19e eeuw van oude meesters in de schilderkunst zoals Francisco goya, Diego Vélazquez en el Greco.
