Sinds 1961 is het idyllische dorpje aan de rivier Wye een boekenstad (een miljoen titels), vergelijkbaar met het Nederlandse Bredevoort en het Belgische Redu. Waar je gaat of staat, er is altijd een boekwinkel (meer dan 35) dichtbij. In april 1977 riep de lokale excentriekeling Richard Booth de onafhankelijkheid uit en noemde zich koning. Het was de eerste dag van de maand.
