Loch Lomond is het is het grootste zoetwatermeer (70 km²) van Groot-Brittannië en het werd zon tienduizend jaar geleden gevormd door een gletsjer. Het meer, dat 38,6 km lang is, is heel toegankelijk en daarom een van de poulairste bestemmingen voor een dagje uit voor de inwoners van Glasgow. Voor hen is het slechts een uurtje rijden. Dat het er druk kan zijn, zul je al gauw merken wanneer je langs de A82 rijdt. De westkant loopt over van de toeristische en recreatieve voorzieningen. Rondom Loch Lomond liggen een paar aantrekkelijke dorpjes, zoals Balloch en Luss. Loch Lomond leunt letterlijk aan bij het Trossachs National Park, waarvan het trouwens ook deel uitmaakt. Het gebied heeft een grote landschappelijke waarde en is op zijn kleurrijkst in de herfst. Niemand minder dan Sir Walter Scott maakte de regio bekend; in zijn verhalen Rob Roy en The Lady of the Lake vormen de Trossachs het decor.
