Shieldaig ligt als een lang lint aan het diep landinwaarts ingesneden Loch Torridon. In 1893 brak de dominee van Shieldaig met de Church of Scotland. Hij sloot zich aan bij de eveneens dissidente dominee van Raasay en lag aan de basis van de Free Presbyterian Church. Aan de westkust, op Skye en de Buiten-Hebriden heeft de kerk nog steeds een grote aanhang; de leden zijn de FreeWees.
