Hoe belangrijk de wind was voor de handel in Athene kan je nog opmaken uit het zeer goed bewaarde gebouwtje met zijn achthoekige vorm, verwijzend naar de 8 windrichtingen: de Toren van de Winden. Een bronzen windvaan in de vorm van Triton gaf de windrichting aan. Elk van de windrichtingen is voorgesteld door een basrelïef. Onderaan het basrelief was een zonnewijzer om de tijd aan te geven. Binnenin was er een ingenieuze waterklok aangebracht om de tijd te meten bij bewolking en tijdens de nacht. Die winden waren van essentieel belang voor de scheepvaart en aldus de handel met de internationale markten rondom het Mediterrane gebied.
