De basiliek van San Petronio heeft een zonnewijzer in de vorm van een meridiaan lijn ingelegd in de bestrating van de linker gangpad. Dit dateert uit 1655. Het werd berekend en ontworpen door de beroemde astronoom Giovanni Domenico Cassini, die les sterrenkunde gaf aan de Universiteit. Met zijn 66,8 meter is dit de langste zonnewijzer ter wereld. De basiliek van San Petronio is de belangrijkste kerk van Bologna. Het is de vijfde grootste kerk ter wereld:132 meter lang en 60 breed, met het gewelf op 45 meter binnenshuis en 51 meter in de gevel. Het kan ongeveer 28.000 mensen bevatten. De eerste steen van de bouw werd gelegd 7 juni 1390.
