De Palatijn is een van de zeven heuvels van Rome. Hij geldt als de heuvel die het eerst werd bewoond, en was sinds de keizertijd de heuvel waar de keizers hun paleis hadden. De naam is misschien afgeleid van de herdersgod Pales, maar deze etymologie is omstreden.
Een latere betekenis is paltsgraaf, een plaatsvervanger van de keizer ten tijde van het Heilige Roomse Rijk. De palts was het kasteel waar deze palatijn woonde en de keizer bij toerbeurt hof hield om daar zelf te regeren.
