In de mergelgrotten van de Sint-Pietersberg werd De Nachtwacht van Rembrandt verstopt tijdens Wereldoorlog II. Het had al op een aantal andere plaatsen verstopt geweest zoals in de duinen bij Castricum en in het kasteel Radboud in Medemblik. In april 1942 werd de Nachtwacht uit de rijkskluis van Heemskerk in de duinen van Castricum naar de mergelgrotten overgebracht. Op 25 juni 1945 arriveerde het schilderij per binnenschip terug in Amsterdam.
