De Elwha River begint op 1.114 meter hoogte in de Olympic Mountains, in de staat Washington. De rivier heeft een lengte van 72 kilometer en mondt uit in de Straat van Juan de Fuca. Het grootste deel van de rivier ligt in het Olympic National Park. In 1992 werd een besluit genomen om de twee dammen in de rivier te slopen. De eerste keer dat de naam van de rivier werd gebruikt was in 1846. In dat jaar gebruikte Henry Kellett deze naam om de rivier op zijn kaarten aan te duiden.
