California City vond zijn oorsprong in 1958 toen professor Nat Mendelsohn, ontwikkelaar van onroerend goed en professor in sociologie, 32.000 hectare Mojave Desert land kocht met als doel de volgende grote stad van Californië te plannen. Hij ontwierp zijn modelstad, waarvan hij hoopte dat die op een dag zou wedijveren met Los Angeles. Het heeft zelfs een Central Park met een kunstmatig meer van 26 hectare (11 ha). Maar de groei bleef ruimschoots achter op zijn verwachtingen. Nu kan je er een enorm netwerk van afbrokkelende verharde wegen zien die woonblokken definiëren met lege, nog te ontwikkelen stadsdelen. Op satellietfoto's kan je zien dat het in oppervlakte de op drie na grootste stad van Californië is. California City werd opgericht op 10 december 1965. Het kan worden beschouwd als een schoolvoorbeeld van een mislukte, geplande stad. Hoewel delen van California City niet zijn ontwikkeld zoals verwacht, toch is California City gegroeid van 3.200 mensen in 1985 tot meer dan 14.000 in 2009.
