La primera menció del Veemarkt data de l'any 1293 quan es va construir el Sint-Julianusgasthuis .
A la primera meitat del segle XIII , sembla que la plaça que avui coneixem com a Veemarkt s'utilitzava com a abocador . Això s'explica pel fet que la plaça encara es trobava fora de l'antic nucli urbà. Probablement també hi havia algun tipus de peatge o lloc de guàrdia . També hi havia un pou que va ser enderrocat el 1672. El pou va ser substituït posteriorment per una bomba, que va ser coronada amb una estàtua de Neptú a principis del segle XVIII.
Sint-Romboutscollege i Sint-Pieters-en-Pauluskerk es troben al Veemarkt. La plaça va ser reconstruïda l'any 2005. Només es va incorporar a la segona meitat del segle XIII amb la construcció de les noves muralles de la ciutat (1264-1268).
Als números 14-16 es pot veure una casa burgesa rococó catalogada .
