Elx és una ciutat del País Valencià, capital de la comarca del Baix Vinalopó, a la vora del riu Vinalopó. La població total del municipi arriba als 234 765 habitants , mentre que la població del nucli urbà és de 190.696 ; així, és la tercera ciutat més poblada del País Valencià, la segona de la província d'Alacant, la vintena en població a nivell estatal i la quarta major ciutat excloent capitals de província. L'àrea metropolitana d'Alacant-Elx, que agrupa Elx amb la conurbació d'Alacant-Sant Vicent del Raspeig-Sant Joan d'Alacant i amb les localitats properes de Santa Pola i Crevillent, és la vuitena més poblada de l'Estat espanyol, amb uns 735.000 habitants.
