L'existència històrica de l'amfiteatre romà de Barcelona s'ha evidenciat a partir de la publicació de la hipòtesi de l'arqueòloga Jordina Sales, que el situa a l'actual barri de la Ribera de la ciutat de Barcelona, al voltant d'on ara es troba l'església de Santa Maria del Mar, amb les graderies de forma oval desenvolupades al voltant del temple actual. Sí que és cert que s'han trobat molt poques restes arqueològiques segures i de fet cap referència documental directa que li donin suport. Complementàriament, el carrer de l'Argenteria seria el vestigi més clar de la via que hauria portat directament des de la porta principalis sinistra de la muralla fins a l'entrada d'aquest edifici.
