Aquesta església s'aixeca sobre les restes d'una fortalesa hispano-islàmica d'època almohade. Al segle XIV , la fortalesa esdevé col·legiata.
Més tard en els segles XVI i XVII s'hi van afegir sis capelles , tres a cada mur lateral de la nau, amb els seus respectius estils renaixentista i barroc.
La façana va ser construïda al segle XVIII. la façana està flanquejada per columnes aparellades i la imatge del patró s'alça a la cornisa.
En aquesta església hi ha diversos elements com el retaule de l'escultor Anton Vazquez. És un exemple d'art espanyol amb influència flamenca de la primera meitat del segle XVI. Destaquen també la capella d'Ayflone amb un excel·lent retaule plateresque i l' estàtua de la Divina Pastora atribuïda a la Roldana,
