Esta iglesia se levanta sobre los restos de una fortaleza hispano-islámica de época almohade. En el siglo XIV , la fortaleza se convirtió en colegiata.
Posteriormente en los siglos XVI y XVII se le añadieron seis capillas , tres a cada lado de la nave, con sus respectivos estilos renacentista y barroco.
La fachada fue construida en el siglo XVIII. la fachada está flanqueada por columnas pareadas y la imagen de la patrona está en la cornisa.
En esta iglesia hay varios elementos como el retablo del escultor Antón Vázquez. Es un ejemplo del arte español con influencia flamenca de la primera mitad del siglo XVI. Destacan también la Capilla de Ayflones con un excelente retablo plateresco y la imagen de la Divina Pastora atribuida a la Roldana,
