L'aljub elevat va ser construït el 1724.
Com a ciutat fortificada, Bergues havia de preveure la possibilitat d'un setge ... un element clau durant aquest bloqueig és l'aigua... i està omnipresent a la ciutat. La cisterna militar, també del 1725, podia contenir 700.000 litres d'aigua ! L'aigua s'emmagatzema i es filtra mitjançant decantació o clarificació . Considerat potable segons els estàndards sanitaris de l'època, proveïa principalment els militars i, de vegades, la població.
El 1820 es va cobrir l'aljub amb un sostre a l'àtic, a partir del qual es va crear un magatzem de cereals .
La teulada es va cremar durant la guerra el 1940 i des de llavors no ha estat restaurada.
