De verheven cisterne werd gebouwd in 1724.
Als vestingstad moest Bergues de mogelijkheid van een belegering voorzien... een sleutelelement tijdens zo'n blokkade is water... en dat is alomtegenwoordig in de stad. De militaire tank, eveneens uit 1725, kon 700.000 liter water bevatten! Het water wordt gestockeerd en gefilterd door het te decanteren of te klaren. Beschouwd als drinkbaar volgens de sanitaire normen van die tijd, bevoorraade het voornamelijk de militairen en soms ook de bevolking.
In 1820 werd de tank bedekt met een dak op de zolder, waarvan een pakhuis voor graan werd gebouwd.
Het dak is afgebrand in 1940 tijdens de oorlog, sindsdien niet gerestaureerd.
