El aljibe elevado fue construido en 1724.
Como ciudad fortificada, Bergues tenía que prever la posibilidad de un asedio ... un elemento clave durante tal bloqueo es el agua... y está omnipresente en la ciudad. ¡La cisterna militar, también de 1725, podía contener 700.000 litros de agua ! El agua se almacena y se filtra mediante decantación o clarificación . Considerado potable según los estándares sanitarios de la época, abastecía principalmente a los militares y, en ocasiones, a la población.
En 1820 se cubrió el aljibe con un techo en el ático, a partir del cual se creó un almacén de cereales .
El tejado se quemó durante la guerra en 1940 y desde entonces no ha sido restaurado.
