The elevated cistern was built in 1724.
As a fortified city, Bergues had to anticipate the possibility of a siege ... a key element during such a blockade is water... and it is omnipresent in the city. The military tank, also from 1725, could hold 700,000 litres of water ! The water is stored and filtered by decanting or clarifying . Considered drinkable according to the sanitary standards of the time, it mainly supplied the military and sometimes the population.
In 1820 the tank was covered with a roof on the attic, from which a grain warehouse was built.
The roof burned down in 1940 during the war and has not been restored since then.
