Originalment al segle XIV, aquesta era una plaça agrícola just fora de les muralles medievals de la ciutat, on els agricultors trillaven el seu gra i els adobers remullaven les pells en un canal d'aigua obert.
Als segles XV i XVI es van construir les arcades i magatzems que l'envoltaven, transformant la plaça en un mercat urbà.
El 1821 s'hi va afegir l'emblemàtica font de quatre gots de Sébbastien Pesetti , d'estil Lluís XVI.
La plaça està envoltada de cases amb porxos del segle XVI, originalment destinades a tintorers. Encara es poden veure cavitats subterrànies i magatzems. Al número 33 es troba l'Hôtel Isnard , construït el 1781 per a l'empresari Maximilien Isnard, amb un elegant balcó i una balustrada de ferro forjat.
Tradicionalment és el lloc de mercats d'aliments i flors , especialment els dissabtes.
Avui dia, la Place aux Aires és la imatge icònica de Grasse, adorada per fotògrafs, postals, campanyes turístiques i artistes.
