El Bastió va ser construït en 1636 per Honoré II de Mònaco , per protegir la ciutat de Menton dels pirates i els atacs estrangers per mar.
És un petit fort costaner amb gruixuts murs, espitlleres i una teulada plana per a canons. Està situat literalment al mar , en un petit moll just a l'entrada de l'antic port (Vieux Port). Per això, ara sembla una illa davant de la ciutat: extremadament fotogènic!
A la dècada de 1950, el fort va ser restaurat per iniciativa de l'artista francès Jean Cocteau . El 1966 , any de la seva mort, es va inaugurar aquí el primer Museu Jean Cocteau , amb sales dissenyades per ell mateix.
