El Bastión fue construido en 1636 por Honoré II de Mónaco , para proteger la ciudad de Menton de los piratas y los ataques extranjeros por mar.
Es un pequeño fuerte costero con gruesos muros, aspilleras y un tejado plano para cañones. Está situado literalmente en el mar , en un pequeño muelle justo a la entrada del antiguo puerto (Vieux Port). Por ello, ahora parece una isla frente a la ciudad: ¡extremadamente fotogénico!
En la década de 1950, el fuerte fue restaurado por iniciativa del artista francés Jean Cocteau . En 1966 , año de su fallecimiento, se inauguró aquí el primer Museo Jean Cocteau , con salas diseñadas por él mismo.
