The Bastion was built in 1636 by Honoré II of Monaco , to protect the town of Menton from pirates and foreign attacks by sea.
It's a small coastal fort with thick walls, loopholes, and a flat roof for cannons. It's literally situated in the sea , on a small mole just at the entrance to the old harbor (Vieux Port). As a result, it now resembles an island off the city—extremely photogenic!
In the 1950s, the fort was restored at the initiative of French artist Jean Cocteau . In 1966 , the year of his death, the first Jean Cocteau Museum opened here, with rooms designed by himself.
