Amfissa era la ciutat més important de la Lòcrida Ozòlia. Estava situada en una plana rodejada de muntanyes i sembla que el seu nom podria derivar del verb grec αμφιέννυμι que significa 'envoltat', precisament per la seva situació, segons diuen Pausànias i Esteve de Bizanci. Pausànias la situa a 120 estadis de Delfos.
