Portrættet af Adele Bloch-Bauer I var længe centrum for den østrigske Galerie Belvedere. Men maleriet blev konfiskeret af nazisterne under krigen fra den jødiske kunstsamler Bloch-Bauer. Selvom Adele Bloch-Bauer i sit testamente bad sin mand om at donere Klimt-maleri til den østrigske stats-galleri efter hans død. Efter en kæmpe juridisk kamp i USA og Østrig, fastslog bindende voldgift fra den østrigske domstol i 2006, at Maria Altmann var den retmæssige ejer af dette maleri og fire andre malerier af Klimt. Maleriet blev solgt til Lauder i juni 2006. New Yorks Neue Galerie siges at have betalt 135 millioner dollars for det femte stjålne Klimt-portræt, Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
